Venezuela vs. Uruguay |
Venezuela tied 0-0 with Uruguay, and assured a first place finish in Group A of the 2007 America Cup, which guarantees them their quarterfinals match in San Cristobal on Saturday.
Peru, who tied in the game before, ends in second place of the group, and will also play on Saturday but in Puerto La Cruz.
The tie with Venezuela helped Uruguay end in third place in the Group and helps them move on to the quarterfinals as one of the best third place finishers.
Bolivia is the eliminated team from Group A.
Venezuela dominated the midfield in the first half, but Uruguay was the first team to have a scoring chance with Vincente Sanchez in the 10th minute.
The hosts had their first chance in the 13th minute with a strong shot from outside of the box by Juan Arango.
Both teams played at a very slow pace that put the game to sleep. The good man marking for both teams did no allow the game to develop.
Venezuela had some chances before the end of the first half, the first was with a free kick by Cesar Gonzalez that was contained by Fabian Carini.
Arango, who is still ost on the pitch, had the other option for Venezuela with a free kick of his own in the 35th minute, that was saved by Carini.
In the second half an error by the Venezuelan defense allowed Uruguay to gain control of the ball in the midfield, which allowed Diego Forlan to shoot from far without any luck in the 52nd minute.
Jose Torrealba came in for Venezuela, and Alvaro Recoba made his America Cup debut for Uruguay, were each teams last options to obtain the three points.
Torrealba was the better of the two on the pitch, he almost surprised Carini in the 68th minute with a header and in the 72nd had a shot graze the crossbar, while Uruguay was not able to capitalize on a pass by Recoba after an error by the Venezuelan defense.
Cesar Gonzalez was close to putting Venezuela up 1-0 with his free kick, that also grased the crossbar in the 90th minute.
