Argentina vs. Paraguay |
Argentina, with the victory over Paraguay 1-0, closes their Group C participation of the 2007 America Cup. They had three victories, and finished in first place in the group without over exerting themselves.
The moment the starting line ups were announced it was apparent that both teams were giving their best players rest for the next round, where errors are no longer permitted.
Both team still went out looking for the three points, because both teams preferred to play Peru in the next round and not Mexico and also not having to move to another city.
Argentina had to win to finish in first place of the group, and they found a Paraguayan side not looking to give up their spot in first place very easily.
The Argentine national team had many changes, but they also had a lot of good players on the field. The Argentine team began controlling the ball and started gaining control of the field.
Even though Argentina dominated the game Paraguay never lost its composure. Carlos Tevez kept attacking for Argentina, but Paraguay managed to finish the first half without giving up a goal.
Carlos Tevez was close to putting the Argentine squad up 1-0, but the ball hit the post in the beginning of the second half. Rodrigo Palacio hit the cross bar for Argentina just minutes later.
Basile began to put the starters in the game, and in one move put in Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi. The crowd had been asking for Messi just minutes before he came on the pitch. The substitutions work for Argentina as Messi gave the team more speed, and Mascherano scored the game winner in the 76th minute for Argentina.
