Brazil Celebrates |
This is the second consecutive tournament that Brazil eliminates Uruguay in the penalty shootout. Three years ago in Peru they won 5-3, after regular time finished 1-1. Brazil will playing the 2007 America Cup final on Sunday in Maracaibo against the winner of the Argentina vs. Mexico game in Puerto Ordaz. Uruguay will play the against the loser for third place in Caracas. Brazil will be going for their eighth America Cup title. Brazil is still far behind Uruguay and Argentina, who have fourteen each. Maicon opened the scoring for Brazil in the 13th minute, Diego Forlan tied the game in the fourth minute of the second half, Julio Baptista put Brazil up 2-1, and Sebastian Abreu closed the scoring in the 70th minute for Uruguay. In the penalty shootout Robinho, Juan, Gilberto Silva, Diego, and Gilberto Silva scored, while Afonso (post) and Fernando (post) missed. For Uruguay Andrés Scotti, Ignacio González, Cristián Rodríguez, and Sebastián Abreu scored for Uruguay, while Forlán (saved), Pablo García (post), and Diego Lugano (saved) missed. The first half was interrupted for 13 minutes due to a loss of power in the light towers in the stadium. The beginning of the game was very tied up in the midfield. Brazil found their first goal after a nice series of passes between Baptista and Robinho. Robinho crossed a ball into Mineiro. Mineiro had his shot saved by Fabian Carini, but Maicon hammered in the reboud. Uruguay's goal came after a clearance from a corner, that Diego Forlan shot one time and made the game 1-1. Brazil went up 2-1 with a goal by Julio Baptista, he took advantage that a Macion free kick caught the defense asleep. Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez brought in Sebatian Abreu for Alvaro Recoba, in order to give the offense some fresh legs. Uruguay's hard work paid off, Diego Forlan smacked a header off the post and Sebastian Abreu put the loose ball away, and leaving the score 2-2.
