09/JUL/2005 -The United States went ahead 1-0 early in the second half after
Canadian defender Josh Simpson scored a self goal as he tried to clear the ball
after an American attack.
The United States dominated the game after that, easily controlling the midfield
and setting up Landon Donovan's goal in the 92nd minute, the result of perfect
pass from midfielder Marcus Beasley.
Despite the win, the United States, which featured a completely different lineup
than the one that crushed Cuba 4-1 earlier in the week, did not play its best
game and has yet to show if it will dominate the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Both teams played poorly in the first half, showing a lack of organization
and not enough follow through on offensive schemes. The United States only had
one scoring chance in the first 45 minutes, while Canada did not even manage
one shot on goalie Kasey Keller.
The United States did not play at its best offensively, but it did control
the midfield and set up a couple well-aimed shots courtesy of defenders Steve
Cherundolo and Greg Vanney.
Donovan had a great opportunity in the 35th minute after an agile pass from
forward Josh Wolff, but the Canadian goalkeeper reacted quickly and stopped
the attack.
In the second half, the United States had another two near-goals: Patrick Noonan's
shot in the 49th minute and Stave Ralston's missed header in the 60th minute.
The third round of Group B is set for Tuesday at Boston's Foxboro Stadium and
will feature Costa Rica-United States and Canada-Cuba.
