10/JUL/2005 -Following an upset against South Africa on Friday, Mexico rebounded
with an aggressive attack and scored early and often to eliminate Guatemala
from Group B.
Jared Borgetti put Mexico up 1-0 lead in the 5th minute and then netted his
second goal just 10 minutes later. The pair of scores gave Borgetti a total
of 35 for the Mexican national team, placing him into a tie with Luis Hernandez
and Carlos Hermosillo on the all-time scorer's list.
South African keeper Miguel Angel Klee saved another two shots on goal by Borgetti
in the first half.
Gerardo Galindo (55th min.) and Omar Bravo (65th min.) rounded out the scoring
for Mexico, which dominated the match over a disorganized Guatemalan side.
Mexico continued to dictate the action in the second half and soon increased
its lead despite the replacement of Borgetti by Bravo.
Galindo scored in the 55th minute on an assist by Luis Ernesto Perez, while
Bravo found the net 10 minutes later on a beautiful pass by Brazilian Antonio
Naleson "Zinha."
Guatemala's defense was no match for Mexico, which dominated play as it did
against South Africa, the difference this time being Mexico's ability to finish.
The waning moments of the match were rough on Guatemala, which lost its captain
Guillermo Ramirez to a red card for arguing with a referee.
Up next for Mexico, the defending Gold Cup champs, is Jamaica, which defeated
Guatemala 4-3 on Friday. Mexico has four Gold Cup titles, more than any other
country in the North and Central America and Caribbean Football Confederation
(CONCACAF).
