With blaring triumphalist headlines, even mildly insulting to age-old rivals Colombia, Panama's press rejoiced Friday in a berth in the final of the Gold Cup, which will be the first-ever tournament championship contested by the national soccer team of this nation where baseball is more widely played and followed.

The 3-2 semifinal win Thursday night at Giants Stadium in New Jersey was particularly sweet because it came against Colombia, the nation from which Panama split off early in the 20th century and a country where soccer is the main sport.

Panama plays the United States, which defeated Honduras in the other semifinal Thursday, on Sunday for the championship.

Under the banner headline "Paisas huevones" (Dumb Colombians), the newspaper Critica devoted its entire front page Friday to a photo of the Panamanian players celebrating their victory after a nerve-racking final 10 minutes when their goalkeeper had to fight off attack after attack from the Colombia squad.

Another daily, La Prensa, gushed that "the name of Panama will remain in the history of the 2005 Gold Cup in the United States."

The paper said many were failing to acknowledge the scale of the Panamanian team's achievement, for which La Prensa assigned much of the credit to the squad's Colombian coach, Jose "Cheche" Hernandez.

"Los pateamos" (We Kicked their Butts) boasted Mi Diario newspaper, pointing out that the much-decried high price of gasoline didn't stop citizens from clogging the streets of Panama City Thursday night with improvised caravans to celebrate the victory.

"People of all ages celebrated in their own way, because Panamanian's hearts are full of pride in their team and in our having spoiled the Colombians's (July 20) independence day," the daily said.
