Hedrick jumps into 1,000 _ and earns another spot

MILWAUKEE (AP) Chad Hedrick has claimed another spot at the U.S. speedskating trials after making a surprise appearance in the 1,000 meters.

Hedrick, who skipped the first round of the 1,000 on Thursday, was talked into racing the event Sunday by his coach, Derek Parra. The three-time medalist ended up with the fourth-fastest time of 1 minute, 10.38 seconds.

The top five made the World Cup team, and the Olympic squad will be determined by the results of those five meets. Shani Davis, Nick Pearson, Trevor Mariscano and Jonathan Kuck also qualified in the 1,000.
