Cielo first stood out in 2006, breaking the South American record in the 100-meters previously established in 1998 by Fernando Scherer.

In 2006, Cielo also won a scholarship to the University of Auburn, becoming part of one of the top swimming teams in the country.

In his first Pan American Games, in Rio de Janeiro, Cielo continued to shine with three gold medals (50-meter free, 100-meter free, and 4x100 freestyle relay) and one silver (4x100 combined relay).

After winning bronze in the 100-meter freestyle in BEijing 2008, he won the first Brazilian gold in swimming: the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 21.30, a new world record.

In 2009, Cielo was able to consolidate his spot as one of the top sprinters in the world. He took the world record in the 100-meters during the Rome World Championships in Italy.

Toward the end of 2009, Cielo broke another record. In the Sao Paolo Open, the Brazilian finished the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 20.91, breaking his own world record.

After the suits he was using were prohibited, Cielo still manashed to break the record held by Alexander Popov in the 50-meter freestyle in the Paris Open with a time of 21.55.

Accostumed to dividing his training between Auburn and Brasil, Cielo decided to return to his country permanently in 2011, when the project Road to Gold 2016 was created.

During the Maria Lenk Competition in 2011, Cielo tested positive during a doping test for a diabetic. The Brazilian was given a warning by the ATS.
