Jonathan McDonald scored a brace and Costa Rica obtained a surprising victory over mighty Brazil 3-1 to eliminate the South Americans from the men soccer competition at the XVI Pan-American games Guadalajara 2011.

Brian Vega scored the first goal of the match in the first minute of play for Costa Rica, and McDonald added two more in minutes 20 and 43, to help the Central Americans defeat a Brazilian side for the first time since a friendly match played on October 13 1960 at San Jose.

Striker Henrique score the only goal for Brazil in the half an hour mark.

"It was Brazil, we played a great match and we are accomplishing our objectives," said head coach Carlos Watson.

McDonald, who will celebrate his 24th birthday on Friday, missed a penalty kick in the 25th minute of play.

Costa Rica will meet Mexico in one of the semifinals on Wednesday as winner of Group A with six points.

In the other semifinal, Argentina will face the winner between Uruguay and Trinidad and Tobago.
