RulesThe America cup is disputed by 12 national teams since 1975, and the presence of the 10 countries affiliated with the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (Conmebol), Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay, and Venezuela, is obligatory. The Conmebol has the right to invite two countires to complete the participants. This has happened since 1999. Since then the Conmebol has decided to invite Concacaf teams. The only exception was in the 1999 edition of the tournament when Japan was invited. In the 2007 edition of the America Cup Mexico and the United States are the two guests. Each tam can have 23 active players, of which three are goalkeepers. All of them may be on the bench during the game. The 12 participants were divided into three groups of four, which were determined in a drawing. That drawing took place February 14 in Maracaibo. Venezuela, Brasil, and Argentina are the heads of each group. System of disputeFirst RoundThe first round will be disputed in championship format, meaning that each team will the other teams in their group. Each victory is three points and every tie is one point. The losing team will not receive any points. After disputing the six games, the two teams with the most amount of points in each group make it to the next round. The two best third place teams will also make it to the quarterfinals, thus completing the eight teams. If the teams are tied point wise, then the tie breaker would be (in order): goal difference, goals scored, head to head match up, goal difference in the head to head match ups, goals scored in the head to head match ups, and a drawing. QuarterfinalsIn this stage of the tournament all of the games are single elimination. The games will be as follows: (1) 1st Group A vs 2nd Best Third Place, (2) 2nd Group B vs Best Third Place, (3) 1st Group B vs 2nd Group C y (4) 1st Group C vs 2nd Group A. If there is a tie game after 90 minutes of play, they will play an additional 30 minutes divided into two 15 minute halves. If the game remains tied after the extra time the game will be decided by way of the penalty shootout. SemifinalsThe winners of each quarterfinal game will face each other as follows: winner of game 1 vs winner of game 2, and winner of game 3 vs winner of game 4. The rules are the same as the quarterfinals. Third PlaceThe losing teams of the semifinal will dispute the third place game. The same single elimination rules are in place for this round. FinalIt will be disputed between the two teams that won their semifinal matches. The same single elimination rules apply. DopingIt is considered doping any intent to enhance a player's performance. The intent of altering or destroying urine samples is also considered an act of doping. The anti-doping tests are done using urine and blood samples after practices and games. Any player, including the ones that did not play, can be called for an anti-doping test. |
