General InformationFounded in 1567, the city is in the northern part of the country in the Federal District. The city's population is approximately 5 million people. It has a surface area of 2050 Km², which corresponds to 0.2% of the national territory. HistoryCaracas was funded on July 25, 1567 by Captain Diego de Losada next to Avila Mountain. The first name, Santiago, was chosen in honor of the Apostle and patron saint of Spain and of all the wars. The most important Venezuelan people were born in Caracas, Simón Bolívar, Francisco de Miranda, and Andrés Bello are classic examples. The city changed its name in 2000 to Distrito Metropolitano of Caracas. Caracas is the capital of Venezuela since February 29, 1864, when it was chosen as a provisional Federal District. In 1998 the municipality of Vargas was separated from the Federal District, thus diminishing the province's territory.
