History

Zulia is derived from indigenous vocabulary of the Molitona ethnic background. It originates from a princess, daughter of "Cacique" Cisnera, she was known for her great beauty. She was famous for fighting the Spanish, which later killed her as they had done with her father years before.

The word zulia also has another origin; it also originates from the indigenous language of the Chibcha's. It is the word they used for an exotic plant that is known as "Palomita" and is being cultivated in Colombia and the western part of Venezuela.

The province was known as Zulia since June 24, 1824 in reference to the Zulia River. The Zulia River begins in the northern part of Santander, Colombia. The river flows into the Catatumbo River, which is the western part of the Econtrados province. In Colombia the river is known as La Plata and Zulasquilla

Maracaibo was first founded in 1529, when German governor Ambrosio Alfinger built a small villa there.
