Founded in 1760 it is located in the northwestern of the Country, in the province of Monaguas. The city's population is of about 599,764 people. It has a surface area of 28.900 Km², which corresponds to 3.17% of the national territory. HistoryIt is the capital of the Monaguas province. Maturin was founded December 7, 1760 by Fray Lucas de Zaragoza. The name originates from the "Cacique" Maturin. He fought the Spanish till his death. The province of Monaguas received its name in 1909 in memory of the brothers José Tadeo Monagas and José Gregorio Monagas, who participated in the independence of Venezuela. Monaguas, of Latin origin, means monk. Until 1856 the territory belonged to the jurisdiction if Cumuna and Barcelona, and it was called Canton. That year it was promoted to province with the name Maturin. Monaguas had another name: Bermudez from 1881 to 1889. |
