General Information
Founded in 1909, it is located in the northeast part of the country in the Anzoátegui province. It has a population of about 1,140,369 people. The city has a surface area of 43,300 Km², which corresponds to 4.7% of the national territory. HistoryCapital of the Anzoátegui province, Puerto La Cruz was founded by Francisco Martinez with the name Santiago de los Caballeros. The city was also known as "El Salado" in reference to the salty waters founded in that region. The city has been known as a port town since the colonial days, and the Virgen de Santa Cruz is the patron saint. The city was known as Pozuelos, but after the city's reconstruction (a fire in 1868 damaged the city) the name of the city was named after the patron saint. The province of Anzoátegui was created in 1909, when it became part of the 20 provinces that make up the Republic of Venezuela at that time. Before that the territory was part of the province of Cumuna. |
