History

Puerto Ordaz was founded in 1947 when iron deposits were discovered in Cerro Bolivar. The Orinoco Mining Company acquired the land in order to explore the land, and they built a port. The port was an incentive to begin moving into the area.

February 9, 1952 Puerto Ordaz was officially founded. The name was chosen in homage to Diego de Ordaz, conquistador of the Orinoco River and Guayana.

Puerto Ordaz was then known officially as Guayana in 1979, when the cities San Felix and Matanzas were integrated to Puerto Ordaz. The Legislative assembly of the province of Bolivar certified the change. Till this day the city is more commonly known as Puerto Ordaz.

The province of Bolivar was founded as Guayana in 1762. The name change occurred in 1901 in homage to Simon Bolivar, hero of the Independence of Venezuela. That same year the province became autonomous.
