Founded in 1561, it is located in the northwestern part of the country. It has a population of about 300 thousand people. It has a surface area of 11,100 Km², which corresponds to 1.2% of the national territory.

History

San Cristobal is the capital of the province of Tachira. It was founded in 1561 by Juan Maldonado de Ordoñes and Villaquirán. The name of the province has an indigenous origin. It is a violet plant that is used for medicinal purposes.

The name Tachira was assigned November 28, 1863 in reference to the Tachira River, which begins in the northern part of the province Paramo de Tama, and it flows into the Zulia River. The river is on the order between Venezuela and Colombia.
