The eternal "Cinderella"

Having only won a single game in America Cup history, Venezuela hopes to use their host nation status as an advantage. They are hoping this is the year they rid themselves of the "ugly duckling" of the continent tag. They will field a renovated squad led by coach Richard Paez.

Venezuela's biggest problem is their players lack of international experience. There are still only a few that play abroad. The Venezuelan local championship is considered one of the weakest in South America. Juan Arango, who has played for Mallorca in Spain since 2004, is one of the few successful European based players.

At least, in the last World Cup qualifier Venezuela finished in eighth place. That was real proof of evolution of Venezuelan soccer. In 2007 the team also compiled a good record in their friendlies posting four wins and two loses.
