| He made his debut in the Polish national team as a right wing in 1971, in a game against Spain. He raised a lot of eyebrows with his speeed, since he was able to run 100 meter dash in 10.8 seconds. In 1972 and 1976 he was Olimpic champion with Poland. He played 104 games.
In Germany 1974, Lato became the surprise of the World Cup and the best goal scorer of the tournament. Plus, he is the best goal scorer in a World Cup, with 7 goals. He was also responsible for the third place spots in 1974 and 1982.
Lato won two Polish Leagues with Stal Mielec, the club of his life. When he turned 30, the Polish federation gave him the chance to play outside of Poland, and signed for Belgium’s Lokeren. In 1983 he moved to Mexico where he played for Atlante, before retiring.
After his retirement he has been a coach in various Polish teams, included Stal Mielec, and a consultant to the Soccer Federation. Right now, he is starting his political career to fight for equal opportunities among the Polsih youth.
