After starting his career in Marroqui, Fonatain palyed for Niza (53/55) and became world known in Stade reims (1956/61). He won the French league in 1958 and 1960 and also the Cup.
Fontaine took advantage of his speed to score so many goals, although he also had a great shot and a powerful header. He scored 27 goals in his 20 games with the national team.
Even though he retired when he was 29 years old because of an injury, Fontaine scored 163 goals in his career and was the best goal scorer in France in 1958 and 1960.
