Health
The German health system has the reputation of being one of the best in the world. There is a large network of hospitals and doctors that handle even the most remote zones of Germany.

Waiting lists for treatment are uncommon. Medical facilities are equipped with the latest technology, and medical insurance covers almost all medicines and treatments. Almost everyone in Germany has access to the system, regardless of income level or social class.

Unfortunately the costs are high. The costs for medical attention – for the doctors, hospital stays and even medicines – are among the most expensive in the world. “Free” treatment does not exist in Germany, not even in public hospitals. Either you or your insurance must pay for all medical assistance, including emergencies.

This is why it is very important to have full medical insurance when going to Germany, as a serious illness could cause a financial disaster. In the majority of cases, you will be asked to prove your coverage. By virtue of a decision made by the European Council on December 22, 2003, as of June 1, 2004, a standard requirement is traveler’s medical insurance (with minimum coverage of 30,000 euros) valid throughout the Schengen zone. This insurance must be obtained by the requestor in the country of origin, although it may also be subscribed by the host.
