Jules Rimet’s dream of organizing a World Cup came true in 1930 in Uruguay, where the first world team tournament took place. The host team’s morale was high after two olympic victories in 1924 and 1928, and Uruguay also ended as World Cup champion after defeating Argentina 4-2.

Argentine player Guillermo Stabile had the honor of being the first goal scorer champion, with a total of 8 goals scored all throughout the tournament. Several European countries contended for the World Cup, such as: France, Yugoslavia, Romania, Belgium, and from the Americas as well: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Bolivia, Uruguay, Peru, USA, and Paraguay.

After 17 matches and 64 goals scored, the World Cup ended with same teams playing the final match, as it has occurred in the 1928 Olympic Games. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2, before the wildly excited fans who crowded the Centenario Stadium, the main Uruguayan soccer arena.
