After 16 years, Europe was again host of a World Cup, this time in Switzerland. The world yielded to Hungarian soccer style, leaded by first level players such as Puskas and Kocsis. There were famous victory margins in this World Cup, such as 9-1 of Hungary over South Korea, who was also defeated 7-0 by Turkey.

To people’s surprise, the German tactical soccer style won the title by defeating Hungary 3-2 in the final match, after losing 2-0 early in the first half. The victory is even more incredible if the 8-3 result of the match of Hungary over Germany in the qualification stage is taken into account.

In the final match against the Germans, Hungarians opened the score 2-0 hardly 8 minutes after the game started. Hungarians saw their soccer style suppressed by the Germans in heavy rain, who turned round the results 3-2 and won the World Cup for the first time. The best goal scorer title was awarded to Hungarian player Sandor Kocsis who scored 11 goals.

Suspicions about German performance persist even nowadays, since no antidoping tests were performed at that time. Shortly after the World Cup had ended, Germany aroused suspicions when some of its players were sent for some time to a nursing home.
