Brazil was the top favorite team in the World Cup in Çhile, and maintained that position even after Pele deserted the field in the second match due to a muscular lesion.

France and Sweden were big absentees in this World Cup, where 56 teams took part, as they failed to qualify in the preliminaries.

The Brazilians defeated Spain 2-1, and England 1-0. Even today, is the referee’s performance questioned by Spaniards, as a clear penalty was not marked in their favor, and Puskas scored a bicycle goal which was invalidated as “dangerous play”.

Brazil enjoyed the support of Chilean fans until the semi-finals, when they encountered the host team.

Brazilian player Garrincha, considered the World Cup’s best player, was part of the most polemic situation that year.

Sent off in the semi-finals, the Brazilian should not have played the final match. As a result of a supposed negotiation by officials behind the scenes, he got away with it and spurred Brazil to their victory over Czechoslovakia.
