The 1970 World Cup in Mexico gave Brazil possession of the Jules Rimet Cup for being the first national team to win the tournament three times. It was a thrilling final, the one played against Italy, as the European team had also obtained two previous victories and was contending for the trophy with Brazil. Mexico World Cup also marked Pele’s farewell from these tournaments, after taking part of four competitions and known, to date, as the Soccer King. There were memorable matches in this World Cup. In quarter finals, the revenge between England and Germany, which disqualified the previous World Cup champions with a 3-2 victory and guaranteed the German a place in semi-finals. Other match engraved in the memory of fans was the emotional semi-final between Italy and Germany, with a 4-3 victory of the Italian team in overtime. During the halves, the match ended 1-1; Germany obtained a tie on the last minute. The overtime was written in soccer history; the most remembered image being German player Franz Beckenbauer with the shoulder displaced and dressed fighting until the end of the match for his team. Carlos Alberto rose the trophy which, early in the 1980s had been stolen from the Rio de Janeiro Soccer Brazilian Confederation and never recovered.
