Originally designed by Architect Werner March, and built between the years 1934 and 1936 for a total cost of 42 million Deutsche Marks, this stadium witnessed the four gold medals received by the U.S. track and field athlete, Jesse Owens, in the Olympic Games of 1936.
Nowadays, one of the roads that lead to this stadium bears the name of the great athete. Since 1985, all Final Matches of the German Cup have been played in this stadium, which was remodeled before hosting three 1974 FIFA World Cup matches.
Renovation works started in the summer of 1992, and they are scheduled to be finished on June 30, 2004. The German Soccer Association submitted its bid to have the 2005 UEFA Champions League played in Berlin. |
