Mungersdorfer was the predecessor to the present modern stadium for the FIFA World Cup, the only fully covered stadium in Germany when it was completed in 1975. Today is home to the FC Köln.

On June 27, 2000, the Municipality of Cologne announced its decision to rebuild Köln Stadium as a modern and functional soccer field.

On June 13, the committee opted for the design by Architects GMP. von Gerkan,
Marg und Partner/Aachen.Hamburg. The works were initiated after FC Köln's last home match in 2001.
