Known locally as the Bundesliga Opera House, the Westfalen Stadium was built for the 1974 FIFA World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund plays there all its home matches, almost always before sell-out crowds. Some 25,000 fans root for their team with load roars from the South stands, which is famous for instilling fear in the visiting team's hearts.

> In November 2001, it was decided to join the four separated stands, thus increasing the stadium capacity to some 69,000 seats.
