Places of Interest

Energy has always brought life to this city. Just like in the entire Ruhr basin, coal has been its main source of wealth. Nowadays, Gelsenkirchen bets on solar energy and has become an economic and research hub.

Coal mines have given way to vast Culturel offering. Where miners used to go deep in the ground to work, now the public gathers to attend theater and cabaret presentations. The old Consol mine is one of the places that offer art instead of coal. The Bergehalde Rungeberg stands out thanks to its beautiful night lighting.

Not only the romanticism of its industrial past turns this old mining city into a great tourist attraction. The Horst Palace can transport the visitor to the times of the Renaissance. Tour guided visits to this beautiful and renovated monument are available. If you wish to do so, you can also undertake a futuristic excursion and visit, for instance, the solar exhibition at the Science Park.

In this “solar city”, the lights do not go off at the end of a match. Those who love opera and ballet will enjoy the Musiktheater im Revier (MiR). There are plenty of choices, because there is not a single place in Europe that concentrates so many theaters and museums like the Ruhr basin, between Duisburg and Hamm.
