The AufSchalke Arena officially opened its doors on August 13 and 14, 2001. The Arena replaced the old Park Stadium and immediately set new guidelines for stadium construction.

“This stadium is a pilot project for the whole world”, proudly announced the President of FIFA, Joseph S. Blatter. On November 20, 2002, the Arena hosted the international match between Germany and Netherlands.

These leading edge venues create a path to follow in the design of stadiums and make the Arena the most modern facility in Europe. It has been praised by the former Minister-President Wolfgang Clement as “the greatest glory of soccer”.

It is equipped with video cubes with four 387 sq. ft. screens each, a state-of-the-art sound system with a maximum output of 193 decibels, a movable field, retractable roof, payment system with electronic card (Knappenkarte) and newly designed electronic traffic and parking control.
